Southwest spikers fall in district semi-finals

State-rated Ash Grove defeated Southwest 25-21, 25-11 in the semi-finals of the district volleyball tournament in Washburn on Oct. 24

Southwest defeated Blue Eye 25-16, 25-18 in the quarterfinals to advance to face the top-seeded Lady Pirates. It was the second time the Trojans had beaten the Bulldogs in two weeks.

Sophomore Shannon Mitchell had 12 kills and six blocks against Blue Eye, while junior Montana Hendrix added nine assists, seven kills, four digs and three blocks and senior Taylor Mettlach had 11 digs, six kills, five blocks, four aces and three assists.

"Every time we needed a point, we got one," said Southwest coach Steve Voyak. "Every time we needed a play, somebody made one. It was a total team effort."

In the semifinals, Mitchell had 13 blocks and 10 kills. Hendrix supplied 11 digs, four assists and three blocks.

Mitchell was named to the first team All-District team.

Hendrix and Mettlach received second team All-District honors.

Southwest finished the season with a record of 20-11-1.
