Cassville boys take seventh at home XC meet

Wednesday, October 17, 2012

Crane's Thomas Chabracek wore down a host of other would-be front runners and then pulled away for a decisive victory at the Cassville Cross Country Invitational on Oct. 8.

Chabracek took the gold medal with a 16:14 performance. Small school powerhouse Lamar won the boys' team title with a score of 31.

Monett placed fifth with 154, Cassville was seventh with 179, Southwest was eighth with 209, and Wheaton placed 11th with 268.

Jelynn Tatum, of Carl Junction, took the girls crown, running 20:12. The Lady Mustangs of McDonald County won the team race with 38 points.

None of the area schools had a complete team in the varsity girls' race.

In the middle school division, Wesley Bethel, of McDonald County, won the boys' race in 9:06, and Kinsey Sorrell, of East Newton, continued her stellar season with a 9:46 clocking for first in the girls' race.

The big hill west of the Aquatic Center is gone, but the loss of the killer hill has not diminished the annual Cassville Cross Country Invitational.

The meet began with temperatures in the 90s under the direction of Chris Shore, the only cross country coach in the history of the Cassville program. The original course was located east of the high school and the two-plus loop route included a scenic path around the pond, multiple visits to the soccer practice field and an occasional llama from the neighboring farm.

Shore envisioned a more challenging course away from the limited school grounds, and the course at the Aquatic Center was born. Changes still occur, but the attending teams and coaches much prefer the new course to the old one.

The Cassville meet is also a rare Monday event. Most cross country competitions occur on Tuesday or Thursday afternoons and Saturday mornings. The Cassville meet has a traditional Monday date to allow teams an extra rest day before the Southwest Invitational on the following Thursday. It is a gentlemen's agreement that has benefited not only the host schools, but the visiting teams as well.

The Cassville and Monett high school squads will compete at the Big 8 Conference Championships at Cassville on Thursday, Oct. 18.
