Chamber to hold pie contest at cook-off

Wednesday, October 3, 2012

The Cassville Area Chamber of Com- merce has added a new competition to this year's Chili and Salsa Cook-Off. The cham- ber will hold its first pie baking contest dur- ing the 2012 Fall Festival.

"I had the honor of being a pie judge during the pie contest at the Civil War re-en- actment last year," said Mindi Artherton, chamber executive director. "Cherry Bailey took care of coordinating the details with the re-enactment and said she would be happy to volunteer her time to the chamber if this was something we wanted to do during the Chili Cook-Off.

"The contest was such a hit during the re-enactment we thought why not do it dur- ing the cook-off?" said Artherton. "I am so excited to have Cherry leading the way on this contest."

Pies will be accepted at the chamber booth from 7 to 9 a.m. during the cook-off on Saturday, Oct. 27. Judging will begin at 10 a.m.

"Pies will be judged in three categories: cream pie, fruit pie and other dessert pie," said Artherton. "Pies will be judged on ap- pearance, crust, filling and overall taste.

"We have 15 pie judges, both male and female, from all age groups and all walks of

life," said Artherton. "We have tried to make sure we have a good group of non biased judges."

Pie entries must be baked at home. Com- mercial bakeries or restaurants are not eligible to participate in the contest. Pies must be baked by the person submitting the entry.

Pies must be baked in an eight- to 10- inch pie pan. Pans will not be returned. Con- stants can enter as many pies as they want in the contest. A separate entry form and recipe must be provided with each entry.

"We would love to see at least 20 pies be entered into the contest, but more is al- ways better," said Artherton.

The first place winner in each category will receive a certificate, two tickets to The Show and $15 in Cassville Cash. The baker of the best overall pie will receive a certifi- cate, four tickets to The Show and $20 in Cassville Cash.

"Area bakers should be interested in en- tering the pie contest because it is a great chance to win Cassville Cash, The Show tickets and bragging rights," said Artherton.
