SW takes second at Diamond tourney

The Southwest volleyball team took second in the Diamond Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 22, falling to the state-ranked Diamond Lady Wildcats 25-23, 25-15 in the championship match.

The Lady Trojans won pool play games against Greenfield, McAuley and Golden City and split with Cassville.

Junior setter Montana Hendrix led Southwest in the win over Greenfield with eight attacks, five blocks and three assists. Against Golden City, senior right side hitter Atisha Boudreau paced the Lady Trojans with five attacks, two digs, a block and one assist.

In the win over McAuley, senior right side hitter Taylor Mettlach had five attacks, five aces, four digs and two assists.

Against Cassville, Boudreau, Mettlach and sophomore middle Shannon Mitchell combined for 13 attacks and three blocks as Southwest won the point differential by 7.

In other noteworthy play, senior outside hitter Chelsie Leroy made all 44 of her serves and led the team in serve reception (35 of 39), and senior outside hitter Jerri Lynn Henry landed 29 of 30 serves, including three aces, and added eight digs.

In the championship, Southwest rallied from a 15-10 deficit to lead 23-22 before losing the final 3 points of the set. Mitchell (six attacks, eight blocks) and senior outside hitter Megan Light (five attacks, four digs) led Southwest in the match.

Hendrix added eight assists and two digs, while Mettlach had three digs and three attacks as the Lady Trojans kept it close throughout.

Southwest captured an important Ozark 7 Conference game 25-23, 25-14 against Verona on Sept. 18. Mettlach had 11 attacks and three blocks, while Hendrix added 10 assists and five blocks.

The Lady Trojans are 2-0 in the Ozark 7 Conference. They have matches scheduled against Pierce City, Hurley and Wheaton this week.
