An 18-year-old Cassville man has been arrested in connection with the Monday morning armed robbery at Casey's General Store, located at 728 Highway 60 in Monett. Barry County Sheriff Mick Epperly and Barry County Detective Brian Landreth made the arrest Tuesday.
Devin D. Hobbs, 18, of Cassville, was arrested and charged with first degree robbery and armed criminal action.
The incident occurred at 5:15 a.m. on Monday Sept. 10, when the suspect, wearing blue jeans, a red shirt and a dark mask, entered the store and brandished a knife, demanding money. He left the store with an undetermined amount of cash.
Two customers witnessed the robbery and chased the suspect until he abandoned the bicycle and fled on foot into a nearby field.
Law enforcement officials from Barry and Newton counties searched the field with a K-9 unit. They recovered money and other items from the robbery but were unable to locate the suspect.
At 5:30 a.m., a Monett resident reported seeing a strange man in his yard. The residence was located approximately one-half mile from the store.
The resident armed himself with a stick and confronted the man. In response to a threat, the resident struck the suspect in the face, and the suspect ran away. Monett officers recovered more items from the Casey's store robbery in the resident's yard.
By mid-morning, Monett officers had recovered money, cigarettes, the getaway bicycle and clothing worn by the suspect.
"This is a great example of the community taking an active role in solving crime," said Monett Police Chief Tim Schweder. "We appreciate their assistance and encourage anyone with information about crimes to call the Barry-Lawrence Chapter of Crime Stoppers."
First degree robbery is a Class A felony and punishable by a minimum of 10 years up to 30 years or life.
The suspect is in custody at the Monett Municipal Jail in lieu of $75,000 cash bond.
