Southwest VB team splits two

The Southwest Lady Trojans volleyball team split games with Marionville and Thomas Jefferson last week.

The Lady Trojans lost a heartbreaker to Marionville after leading 22-16 in the third and deciding set.

Sophomore middle hitter Shannon Mitchell led Southwest with 10 attacks and 10 blocks, while senior right side hitter Taylor Mettlach, and junior middle hitter Montana Hendrix added seven attacks and five assists apiece. Senior outside hitter Chelsie Leroy had her consecutive serve streak snapped at 174.

Against Thomas Jefferson, Mettlach contributed seven aces, six assists and two attacks, while Mitchell recorded seven attacks, five digs and four blocks as the Lady Trojans won their first Ozark 7 Conference game.

The Lady Trojans host Galena and Diamond at home this week before participating in their own Volleyfest tournament on Saturday.

Twelve teams, including five from northwest Arkansas, will compete in Volleyfest 2012.

Joining the Lady Trojans for the annual event are Blue Eye, Cassville, Crane, Forsyth, Verona and Wheaton. Arkansas teams will include Farmington, Huntsville, Gentry, Lincoln and Pea Ridge.

Matches are set to begin at 9:15 a.m. at the high school and middle school gyms. All teams will play three games (Two sets to 25 points) in pool play.

The top four teams advance to the championship bracket. Teams seeded fifth through 12th will then play one additional game for either fifth, seventh, ninth or 11th place.

The championship match is scheduled for late afternoon.

Additionally, the coaches will choose a 13-player all-tournament team. They will be divided into first team and second teams and an overall tournament MVP.
