The cross country season kicked off on Saturday with a number of meets around the state. Some races were cancelled due to the weather and course conditions.
The Strafford Invitational went on as planned Saturday morning, with Monett, Purdy and Wheaton among the competing schools.
Mountain View-Liberty won the boys team race, scoring 77 points. Monett was seventh with 182, and Wheaton finished 14th with 329. Thomas Chabrecek, of Crane, was the individual champion, running the 5K course in 16:17.
Wheaton was led by Jonathan Sherwood's 18:02 performance in 26th place. Other Bulldog finishers included: David Haston, 88th in 21:03; Tyler McGarrah, 94th in 21:23; Justin Yeary, 99th in 21:58; Joey Robbins, 104th in 22:18; Christian Dunegan, 106th in 22:51; and Justin Beck, 111th in 26:10.
Purdy did not field a complete team, but was represented by Devan Keeler, 110th in 24:55.
Springfield Catholic won the girls division, scoring 45 points. Monett placed seventh with 202, and Wheaton was 12th with 307. Strafford's Katelyn Hatz won the gold medal with a 19:36 effort.
Chase Burns led Wheaton with her 54th place finish in 24:03. Other finishers for the Lady Bulldogs were: Brittany Harmon, 64th in 25:09; Haley Beck, 92nd in 28:01; Anastasia Lowry, 97th in 29:41; and Krista Dunegan, 105th in 34:27.
