Wheaton Council considers sales tax increase

Wednesday, August 8, 2012

On June 5, the Wheaton City Council directed Marianne Witt, city clerk, to obtain information on placing a one-eighth of a cent sales tax increase on the February 2013 ballot.

Mayor Donnie Powell said aldermen are still considering the possibility of placing the issue on the ballot. The proposed increase would be used to boost the city's general revenues.

During the June meeting, the council also voted to offer a separate rental fee for two-hour events, such as baby and wedding showers.

The rental fee for short events will be $25. A $50 deposit will also be required, but if groups clean up after events the deposit will be returned.

In other business, the Wheaton City Council:

* Received a clean audit report from Marshall Decker of Decker and DeGood.

* Directed Clint Clark, police chief, to ask residents to remove trash receptacles from curbs after each Monday trash collection.

* Heard that Powell plans to address the South Barry County Ambulance Board regarding ambulance service for the Wheaton area.

* Alderman Ryan Henderson made a request for officers to prohibit vehicles from driving into the city park during cruise nights.
