BCSO issues scam warning

Wednesday, July 25, 2012

The Barry County Sheriff's Office has issued a warning regarding scams that have been used to target local community members.

Several area residents have reported that they have received a fraudulent call notifying them that they have won a large sum of money. The resident is asked to mail a small sum of money to the notification center in order to receive the reward.

A second scam asks individuals to provide personal information by email in order to receive an inheritance of money.

Sheriff Mick Epperly reminds area residents not to give out any personal information over the phone or by email. Area residents should also refuse any requests for money in advance.

"If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is," said Epperly.

Community members who have questions about these scams or who would like to report a scam, should call the Barry County Sheriff's Office at 847-6556.
