Two killed in county crashes

A Shell Knob man has been arrested in connection with a fatality crash in Shell Knob last Wednesday.
Nicholas C. Kulhanek, 27, of Shell Knob, has been charged with felony vehicular involuntary manslaughter, felony leaving the scene of an accident, driving while intoxicated, careless and imprudent driving and no insurance.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at 8:30 p.m. July 11 on Highway 39 in Shell Knob. Kulhanek was driving a 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix and was attempting to make a turn when he struck a 1967 Harley-Davidson motorcycle, driven by Aaron L. Poston, 49, of Shell Knob, head on. Poston was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:15 p.m. by Barry County Coroner Charlie McManus.
Kulhanek was convicted of similar charges in April of 2005. He was arrested for no valid driver's license, leaving the scene of an accident and driving while intoxicated. He was ordered to serve 30 days with the Missouri Department of Corrections.
* A Carthage man is dead following a single-vehicle crash that occurred at 2:35 p.m. on Highway W about three miles east of Wheaton. The crash occurred when the driver of a 2000 GMC Sierra, Manuel D. Callejas, 54, of Carthage, traveled off the right side of the roadway, struck a fence and overturned. Two passengers in the vehicle were also injured. Ashley M. Flores, 13, of Wheaton, sustained moderate injuries and was taken by ambulance to Mercy Hospital in Springfield. Martha Hernandez, 7, of Wheaton, was airlifted to Mercy Hospital in Springfield with serious injuries. None of the vehicle's occupants were wearing seat belts, according to the Patrol.
