Gearing up for the Fourth of July

Wednesday, June 27, 2012

Area residents gearing up for next week's Fourth of July holiday will have plenty of activities to add to their calendars.

The Shell Knob Chamber of Commerce will hold its 37th annual Fire and Thunder fireworks display on Wednesday, July 4. The show will begin at approximately 9:30 p.m.

Fireworks are shot from a location about one mile east of the Shell Knob bridge. Viewing is best from the lake, but the show can also be watched from several locations along Highway 39 or Highway YY.

Fire and Thunder is a free event and supported in part by the sale of T-shirts, which are available at many retail outlets in Shell Knob, through the purchase of tickets for the "man cave" storage shed drawing and donations.

In conjunction with Fire and Thunder, there will be a boat parade on Table Rock Lake. Boaters will congregate on the south side of Lost Hill Island, at the confluence of the Kings and White Rivers, at 6:30 p.m. and begin idling toward the Shell Knob bridge at 7 p.m. All types of crafts are welcome to participate in the parade.

In the event of inclement weather, the festivities will be held on Thursday, July 5.

For more information, call the Shell Knob Chamber of Commerce at 417-858-3300.

The Eagle Rock-Mano-Golden Fire Department will host its annual Fired Up and Smokin' Fireworks Show starting at dusk over the Highway 86 bridge on July 4.

This year, the Fourth of July Barbecue will be held at the Eagle Rock Fire Station, about one-quarter-mile west of the Highway 86 bridge. The facility offers a larger parking area and air conditioning for diners.

The menu features smoked pork and brisket, coleslaw and baked beans. Serving starts at 11 a.m.

There will also be an auction of assorted items donated by area businesses. Donnie Stumpff will serve as auctioneer.

A dunk tank will allow guests the opportunity to dunk their favorite firefighter or first responder.

Donations are still being accepted for this year's display. Contributions may be mailed to: Eagle Rock Fireworks, 30625 State Highway 86, Eagle Rock, MO 65641.

The Seligman Chamber of Commerce will celebrate the Fourth of July starting at 6 p.m. on Saturday, June 30, at the Seligman Community Building.

Food, games, a cake walk, entertainment and fireworks are on tap for the evening's festivities. There will be a charge for food and games, but the fireworks display and entertainment is free.

Those planning to attend are encouraged to bring lawn.
