BCHD conducts food-service inspections in May

The Environmental Services division of the Barry County Health Department inspected 33 food-service establishments during the month of May. Of that group, 20 establishments had critical violations and nine had no critical or non-critical violations.

Big M Marina near Cassville, Little Tommy's Dogs I mobile unit, Freedom Concessions mobile unit, Garcia's Mexican Restaurant in Shell Knob and Mercy Hospital Cafeteria in Cassville underwent routine inspections in May that yielded no critical or non-critical violations.

Jack's Ice Cream mobile unit, Rosie's Diner To Go mobile unit and Taqueria El Rancho in Monett underwent pre-opening inspections in May that yielded no critical or non-critical violations.

Jenkins Kwik Stop in Aurora underwent a follow-up inspection in May that yielded no critical or non-critical violations.

Critical violations were found at 20 establishments:

* Southwest Middle and Elementary School in Washburn underwent a complaint inspection on May 1 and one critical and one non-critical violations were found. The critical violation was: sanitizer too week. The violation was corrected on the spot.

* Main Street Discount in Cassville underwent a routine inspection on May 1 and one critical and one non-critical violations were found. The critical violation was: cheese that has melted from heat damage displayed for sale. The violation was corrected on the spot.

* B&P Discount Grocery in Cassville underwent a routine inspection on May 1 and two critical and two non-critical violations were found. Critical violation were: numerous cans excessively dented and no longer safe for consumption displayed for sale; and face cleaner and bath bubbles stored with and above food items. The violations were corrected on the spot.

* BBQ Station in Cassville underwent a routine inspection on May 2 and one critical and one non-critical violations were found. The critical violation was: uncovered employee beverage on prep counter in dishwashing area. The violation was corrected on the spot.

* Sonic in Cassville underwent a routine inspection on May 2 and three critical and two non-critical violations were found. Critical violations were: bowl without handle used to scoop ice and employee touched ice in the process; corndogs dated May 1 not discarded; and uncooked hashbrowns left on shelf above fryer without time or temperature control. The violations were corrected on the spot.

* Subway, located in the Cassville Walmart Supercenter, underwent a routine inspection on May 2 and four critical and six non-critical violations were found. Critical violations were: uncovered employee beverage on prep table; flies too numerous to count in kitchen, behind counter and in dining room; condiment holder by beverage machine not clean; and container holding single service cups and lids not clean and prep table shelf not clean. A follow-up inspection was conducted on May 3 and one critical and no non-critical violations were found. The critical violation was: amount of flies decreased, however still numerous flies in the dining room, behind the serving and prep counter and in the kitchen. A second follow-up inspection was conducted on May 7 and all critical violations were corrected.

* Eagle's Lodge #4155 in Shell Knob underwent a routine inspection on May 7 and one critical and four non-critical violations were found. The critical violation was: employee has uncovered drink behind bar where food and drinks are prepared. The violation was corrected on the spot.

* Taco Bell/KFC in Cassville underwent a complaint inspection on May 10 and seven critical and nine non-critical violations were found. Critical violations were: breading for chicken not labeled with four-hour discard time once it is used; soiled breading container refilled instead of washed, rinsed and sanitized between uses; chicken on buffet not discarded at discard time; in-use serving utensil not washed, rinsed and sanitized at least every four hours; no air gap between sink drain pipe and flood rim level of floor drain; soiled sheet pan stored as clean and tubs of various breading mixes are heavily soiled; and breading held without temperature control not discarded every four hours. The violations were corrected on the spot. A follow-up inspection was conducted on May 14 and no critical or non-critical violations were found.

* La Michoacana in Monett underwent a routine inspection on May 10 and 16 critical violations and eight non-critical violations were found. Critical violations were: nobody ServSafe certified on duty; employee drink in meat area has no lid or straw; equipment and dishes not sanitized after use; glass cleaner stored on shelf above pastas; spray bottle with blue liquid (glass cleaner) not labeled with common name; meat that has been cooked left on counter without time or temperature control; meat in the freezer and spices and cut avocado in meat area have no packaging or container; molded sausage in the walk-in cooler for the meat area; gray tub, grocery sacks and cardboard boxes used as containers for food are not food grade; numerous cooked meats and sauces made at the store not dated with seven-day discard date; raw chicken stored over whole raw beef and whole raw beef stored over ready-to-eat sauces; meat slices and saws not cleaned and sanitized at least every four hours; counter, stove and microwave in kitchen soiled with food debris and grease; carton of eggs left on the counter without time or temperature control; spilled honey on display shelf; and employee not properly washing hands. A follow-up inspection was conducted on May 24 and no critical or non-critical violations were found.

* KFC/LJS in Monett underwent a complaint inspection on May 14 and two critical and zero non-critical violations were found. Critical violations were: bread pudding dated May 11 not discarded on discard date; and utensils used for breading fried chicken not washed, rinsed and sanitized between uses. The violations were corrected on the spot.

* Los Arcos Mexican Restaurant in Monett underwent a complaint inspection on May 16 and eight critical and four non-critical violations were found. Critical violations were: employee drinks in the kitchen and dish washing area have no lid or straw; numerous food items, including cooked beef, cut melon and salsa, have no discard date; employees preparing food not washing their hands when changing gloves; sanitizer for kitchen too strong; raw choritzo stored about ready-to-eat foods and numerous foods, including taquitos, batter and sausage, in freezer and fridges left uncovered between use; cooked chicken and beef held at 130 degrees and 120 degrees on wire racks on grill instead of 140 degrees or above; raw shell eggs left on the counter beside grill without time or temperature control; and shrimp cold unit held at 50 degrees and cream in mini fridge for servers at 48 degrees instead of 41 degrees or below. A follow-up inspection was conducted on May 24 and one critical and no non-critical violations were found. The critical violation was rice, beans and sauce on steam table held at 130 degrees.

* Denali Dreams in Monett underwent a routine inspection on May 16 and one critical and one non-critical violations were found. The critical violation was: sanitizer too strong. The violation was corrected on the spot.

* B& J BBQ and Fish in Shell Knob underwent a routine inspection on May 17 and thee critical and six non-critical violations were found. Critical violations were: slaw dressing base with discard date of May 16 not discarded; no one ServSafe certified or equivalent on duty; and open can of beans in cooling unit not labeled with discard date. A follow-up inspection was conducted on May 21 and no critical or non-critical violations were found.

* Kum and Go in Monett underwent a routine inspection on May 21 and one critical and four non-critical violations were found. The critical violation was: ice machine has bacteria growth inside. A follow-up inspection was conducted on May 25 and no critical or non-critical violations were found.

* Utopian Bean in Purdy underwent a routine inspection on May 23 and one critical and one non-critical violations were found. The critical violation was: uncovered employee beverage on counter. The violation was corrected on the spot.

* Rapid Roberts in Monett underwent a routine inspection on May 25 and two critical and one non-critical violations were found. Critical violations were: sandwiches in hot case held at 120 degrees instead of 140 degrees or above; and bacterial growth inside ice machine. A follow-up inspection was conducted on May 30 and no critical or non-critical violations were found.

* Taco Bell in Monett underwent a routine inspection on May 25 and one critical and three non-critical violations were found. The critical violation was: taco meat, chicken and steak not documented with discard times. The violation was corrected on the spot.

* Country N in Wheaton underwent a routine inspection on May 30 and nine critical and five non-critical violations were found. Critical violations were: uncovered employee beverage in kitchen on prep counter; two employees were handling ready-to-eat foods with bare hands; numerous food items, including baked potato, noodles, salsa and hashbrowns, have no discard date; turkey, chicken noodles and ham not discarded on discard date; sanitizer too week; numerous food items in reach-in cooler not covered to prevent contamination; shelf below prep counter where plates and to-go boxes are stored, food contact side down, has heavy accumulation of food debris; employee handled raw meat, removed gloves and put on new gloves without washing hands; and employee handled ready-to-eat food with bare hands. The violations were corrected on the spot.

* Roadhouse Grill and Pub in Shell Knob underwent a routine inspection on May 30 and one critical and no non-critical violations were found. The critical violation was: sanitizing solution too strong. The violation was corrected on the spot.

* El Mariachi in Cassville underwent a complaint inspection on May 30 and 12 critical and one non-critical violations were found. Critical violations were: sliced tomato and salsa left on counter without time or temperature control; employee handled taco with bare hands; rice held on steam table at 110 degrees; numerous food items, tomatoes, salsa and meat, have no discard date; tamale meat not discarded on discard date of May 10 and salsa not discarded on discard date of May 3; can opener put away as clean has food debris on it; one spatula chipped and pitted too badly to be properly cleaned; two bottles of chemicals not labeled with common name; sanitizer too strong; raw chicken stored above raw beef, stored above tomatoes; uncovered employee beverage in the kitchen; and nobody ServSafe certified or equivalent on duty.

The following four establishments had only non-critical violations:

* Presto Espresso in Cassville underwent a routine inspection on May 1 and three non-critical violations were found.

* Dock-N-Eat underwent a routine inspection on May 4 and one non-critical violation was found.

* Monett Speedway underwent a routine inspection on May 6 and four non-critical violations were found.

* Braum's in Monett underwent a routine inspection on May 16 and one non-critical violation was found.
