Friday Squared is back

Wednesday, June 6, 2012

This Friday, the Cassville Area Chamber of Commerce will hold its first Friday Squared of 2012. As in the past, the June event will offer an assortment of family-friendly activities and an opportunity to watch an outdoor movie on the Cassville square. In addition, this month's event will celebrate the 125th anniversary of two local businesses, Commerce Bank and Willis Insurance.

In planning their 125th anniversary bash, Commerce Bank and Willis Insurance officials decided to use their celebration to draw community members to Cassville's downtown area. The businesses plan to serve free hamburgers, hotdogs, chips, soda and anniversary cake to community members during the pre-show block party, which will begin one hour earlier, at 6 p.m., on June 8. Bank and insurance agency officials have stated that they hope the event will draw even more community members to the downtown square in support of local businesses and organizations.

Friday Squared will also offer live entertainment, shopping, games and other activities. A pair of popular local bands have signed up to provide music. Barry County Connection will perform from 6 to 7:20 p.m., and J Rock and the Third Street Band will perform from 7:45 p.m. until dark. Members of the Ozark Posse have planned a re-enactment and old-time shootout in honor of the 125th anniversary celebration as well. The re-enactment and shootout will take place at around 7:20 p.m.

An assortment of local businesses and organizations have signed up to provide activities and information at Friday Squared. The Cassville YMCA will return with an inflatable for youngsters, and the Cassville Branch Library will once again offer an activity for children. Other non-profit groups will hold fundraisers during the event by selling snacks and desserts.

The pre-show block party and anniversary celebration will conclude at dark. Community members are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets and gather around the outdoor big screen to watch "Back to the Future III." Approximately 50 community members usually stick around for the movie, but the Friday Squared planning committee would love to see all attendees stay to enjoy the outdoor film.

If you aren't able to attend this month's Friday Squared, mark your calendar now for next month's event, which will be held on July 13. Plans are already being made for the pre-show block party, which will offer a treasure hunt theme. Attendees will even have the opportunity to take part in a scavenger hunt and be entered into a drawing for an assortment of prizes donated by local businesses.

Commerce Bank and Willis Insurance deserve a special "thank you" for partnering with the chamber to help boost attendance at Friday Squared in June. This generosity makes it easy to see why these businesses have remained successful for 125 years.
