Exeter business instructor retires
After 33 years of service, Exeter High School business instructor Cathy Harter is retiring from the R-6 School District at the end of the 2011-12 school year.
"I want to thank everybody for the kindness and support they have shown me," said Harter. "I have grown close to many of the students who I have taught."
Harter, who graduated from Ash Grove High School, earned her teaching degree at Missouri State University, formerly known as Southwest Missouri State University.
The local teacher began her career in education at Purdy. After working part-time for the R-2 School District for three years, she joined the Exeter High School staff as the business teacher in 1979.
"I lived close to Exeter, and I needed the job," said Harter. "I will really miss the kids here. I enjoy knowing everybody and their backgrounds."
In addition to serving as Exeter High School's business instructor, Harter has served as the school's yearbook and newspaper advisers and as the Exeter FBLA adviser since the early 1990s.
Harter is retiring to spend more time with her husband, Jerry. Together the two plan to work on their family farm. They will also likely spend more time visiting their son, Stephen, who lives in Atlanta, Ga., with his wife, Kristen, and 2-year-old son, Sam.
Former Exeter students and faculty and staff members interested in sending cards or letters to Harter can mail them to: Exeter School, 101 Locust St., Exeter MO 65647. Harter said she would also enjoy receiving photos of her former students.
