Southwest High School athletes shined at Saturday's Class 2 Sectional 3 Track and Field Meet at Fair Grove as area athletes strove to qualify for the state meet this weekend.
Southwest's Cristian Sellars shot into the lead entering the final lap of the boys 800-meter race and pulled away to win in 2:01.2. Freshman Nicole Ickes became the first Southwest girl to qualify for the state meet since 2003, as she placed third in the 300-meter hurdles and fourth in the 100-meter dash.
The Trojans scored 13 points on the day, and the Lady Trojans scored 15.
The Pierce City girls racked up 80 points to top the field.
Pierce City's Krishna Merriman was the only individual gold medal winner for the Lady Eagles. She took the 400-meter dash in 59.5. The 4x200 relay also collected gold medals for Pierce City.
The Pierce City boys scored 30 points and finished ninth in the field of 21 teams.
The top four places in each event qualified to the Class 2 State Track and Field Championships, which will be held at Lincoln University in Jefferson City on May 18 and 19.
