Students graduate from DARE program

DARE essay winners recognized Democrat Photo Southwest, Wheaton and Purdy sixth graders celebrated Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) graduation in the Southwest Middle School gymnasium on May 4. Several students were recognized for writing exceptional DARE essays this year. Students from Wheaton Elementary School and Purdy Middle School traveled to Washburn to participate in the annual Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) graduation, which was held in the Southwest Middle School gymnasium on May 4.

Barry County DARE Officer Larry Stockton opened the DARE graduation by introducing teachers, administrators and other officials in attendance at the event. Stockton also recognized his wife, Cheryl, who assists him with the DARE program.

Barry County Sherriff Mick Epperly served as the special guest speaker during the graduation ceremony. Epperly read the poem "I Am Meth" and spoke to the students about making positive decisions throughout their lives.

Purdy DARE graduates

This year, one student from each school district was selected to read their DARE essay at the graduation ceremony. Essay contest winners included: Taylor Swindle, of Southwest; Emma Mareth, of Purdy; and Savina Vang, of Wheaton.

Stockton also recognized five students who were selected as runners-up in the essay contest. They were: Lane Morgan and Landon Hendrix, both of Southwest; Hallie Henderson and Caleb Lucero, both of Purdy; and Katie Peterson, of Wheaton.

DARE certificates were presented to each student by Southwest, Wheaton and Purdy teachers. Eileen Ford, Wheaton Elementary School principal, Janet Boys, Purdy Middle School principal, and Beverly Bonner, Southwest Middle School principal, assisted with the presentations.
