Galvan sweeps at district meet

The Wheaton Bulldogs began their quest for another top four finish at the state track meet on Saturday, scoring 82 points while posting a third place team finish at the Class 1, District 4 Track and Field Championships at Rolla. Vienna won with 147 points, and Humansville was second with 92.

Wheaton's boys claimed the second place trophy at last year's Missouri State High School Activities Association championships.

Bubba Galvan breezed to four gold medals on Saturday to lead the Wheaton boys. Galvan won both horizontal jumps, marking the sand in the triple jump at 43'8", and in the long jump at 22'4". He won the high hurdles in 15.89, and then took the 300-meter hurdles in 40.06. The Wheaton senior is the defending Class 1 state champion in all four events.

Darrel Burns and Justin Walker finished first and third in the high jump, clearing 6'2" and 5'8", respectively. Kyle Robbins was second in the discus with a toss of 107'10".

Wheaton's 4x200 relay team of Robbins, Chase Cantwell, Kayvick Yang and Justin Yeary placed fourth in 1:41.9, and the 4x400 quartet of Cantwell, Joseph Robbins, Justin Walker and Yang placed third in 3:57.24.

Samantha Etzler took fourth in the 800-meter in 2:52.39 to lead the Wheaton girls. The Lady Bulldogs finished 10th with 17 points.

The top four finishers in each event qualified to the Class 1 Sectional at Willard.
