Southwest's senior middle-distance specialist Cristian Sellars won the 800-meter dash at Lamar on Saturday, providing the highlight for area athletes at the Class 2 District 5 Track and Field Championships. Sellars ran a personal best 2:02.36, edging past the legendary Cody Sapp for second on the All-Time Trojan List.
Caleb Mitchell, the Southwest record holder in the event at 1:58.91, cheered Sellars on from the rail.
Jeff Elkins claimed third in the long jump for the Trojans, with a 19-2.25 effort, and Kordell McNabb placed fourth in the shot with a throw of 42-5.
Southwest's boys placed ninth with 28 points. Host Lamar dominated, winning with 180.
Nicole Ickes of Southwest finished third in both the 100-meter dash (13.41) and the 300-meter hurdles (49.93). Montana Hendrix lost a tiebreaker with Taylor Alumbaugh of El Dorado Springs in the high jump and finished second with a leap of 5-1.
The Lady Trojans placed 10th with 29 points. Pierce City won the girls division with 132.
Purdy's Kaylynn Harkey placed sixth in the pole vault. Those three points were all the Lady Eagles could muster, just four days after winning the team title at the Ozark 7 Conference meet.
The top four finishers in each event qualified to the Class 2 Sectional at Fair Grove on Saturday.
