Melvin Foster "Mel" Harker, 91, of Shell Knob, passed away Friday, March 30, 2012.

He was born March 5, 1921, in Waterville, Kan., the son of Frank J. and Katherine (Albright) Harker. In November, 2007, he married Ruby "Louise" Pratt, who survives.

Additional survivors include: one sister, Maxine Hassig; two sons, Michael Harker and his wife, Colleen, and Charles Harker; one daughter, Kaye Hansen and her husband, James; four stepsons, Ken Smith and his wife, Connie, Timothy Smith and his wife, LeeAnn, Don Lampe and Darrell Lampe; two step daughters, Linda Herdman and her husband, Bob, and Lisa Tapscott; 12 grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his first wife, Evelyn; second wife, Wilma; four sisters, Mary Mitchell, Mildred Vollman, Betty Harris and Harriet McComas; two brothers, Wayne Harker and Harold Harker; two daughters-in-law, Shirley Harker and Christine Harker; and two grandchildren.

He grew up and received his education at Waterville, Kan., where he graduated from high school. On Oct. 16, 1939, he entered the U.S. Armed Forces and was discharged in June, 1945. For 37 years, he worked for Trans World Airlines in Kansas City, and Oklahoma City, Okla., as an Airframe and Power plant mechanic until his retirement in 1982. In 1986, he moved to Shell Knob to make his home. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Shell Knob, a life member of VFW Post 2203 and a life member of Masonic Lodge #173 in Belle Plaines, Kan.

Funeral services were held today (Wednesday) in Shell Knob First Christian Church, under direction of Fohn Funeral Home, Shell Knob. Pastor Tom Rees will conducted the services. Burial was at Lake Park Memorial Gardens, Shell Knob. Military honors were be conducted by VFW Post 2203.
