Relay team to host shopping event

Wednesday, March 28, 2012

The Dream Makers Relay For Life team will hold its first big fundraiser of the year, Shoppin' Out Cancer in the Shell, at the Shell Knob/Viola Community Building from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 31.

"As many Shell Knob residents know, the Dream Makers are a team who participate in the South Barry County Relay For Life," said Krissy Peters, Dream Makers team member. "With your support, in 2011 we were able to raise over $2,600 to benefit the American Cancer Society.

"Several individuals on the team are cancer survivors, and others have lost loved ones to cancer," said Peters. "This makes it personal for all of us. Relay For Life is a great way to help raise awareness and funds to help the ones we love have hope that someday there will be a cure for cancer."

The following local businesses will participate in Shoppin' Out Cancer in the Shell: Miche Purses; Avon; Scentsy; Tupperware; Mary Kay; Premier Jewelry; Lakeview Acres Grocery and RV Park; Crafty Sams; Personalized Pans; Flower Power; and Papparazi Jewelry.

Each event vendor will donate a portion of sales to the Dream Makers team.

Community members who attend Shoppin' Out Cancer in the Shell will also have the opportunity to purchase luminarias for this year's Relay, which will be held at the Cassville Wildcats Football Stadium from noon to midnight on June 16. Luminarias are purchased in honor or memory of a loved one who is battling or lost their fight against cancer.

Last year, 101 Barry County community members, including 85 newly diagnosed patients, received services through the American Cancer Society.

The services used by Barry County residents were: lodging at the Hope Lodge, five patients, 202 nights; diagnosis and chemotherapy and radiation effects information, 39 patients; free cosmetic kits and information through the Look Good Feel Better program, five patients; gas cards, 68 patients; wigs, 15 patients; and breast cancer support through the Reach to Recovery program, one patient.

"These are just a few of the examples of how the American Cancer Society and Relay For Life of South Barry County helped provide free programs and services to cancer patients," said Peters.
