Kelso Eugene Sturgeon lll, 50, passed away on Wednesday March 21, 2012, at Mercy Hospital in Springfield after a long battle with auto immune disease.

He was born on May 2, 1961, in Louisville, Ky., the son of Kelso and Sylvia (Troutman) Sturgeon. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Don and Lavona Troutman, of Cassville, and Bessie and Kelso Sturgeon Jr., of Belle Plains, Kan.

Survivors include: his mother, Sylvia and step-farther Red Phillips, of Cassville; his father, Kelso Sturgeon, Jr., and his wife Barbara, two brothers, David and Don Sturgeon, and half-sister, Jessica Sturgeon, all of Las Vegas, Nev.; half-sister, Abigail Hankins, of California; and two step brothers, Butch Phillips, of Branson, and David Phillips, of Austin, Texas.

He graduated from Dana Hills High School in Dana Point, Calif. He attended Saddleback College and UCLA and graduated with degrees in history and English from Towson State University in Baltimore, Md. He worked as a newspaper reporter for the Daily Racing Form, The Cassville Democrat, The Joplin Globe and the Miami, Okla., News Herald. He was employed by the city attorney of Miami, Okla., for many years. His last job before becoming ill was with George's Processing Plant as an inspector. He was an active member of the St. Stephens Episcopal Church were he served as junior warden. He was a member of the St. Thomas A'Becket Episcopal Church in Cassville. Memorial donations may be given to the church or the Cassville Senior Center Meals on Wheels program.

Funeral services were held Sunday at the St. Thomas A'Becket Episcopal Church on Highway 112 and AA Highway. Mother Edie Bird conducted the services. burial will be in Independence, Kan., at a later date.
