Garden Sass to open 2012 season on April 13

Wednesday, March 21, 2012

Garden Sass Farmers' Market will open its 2012 season on Friday, April 13. In addition to offering produce and other goods in the city park on Tuesdays and Fridays the Cassville-based farmers' market will offer Saturday hours at an alternative location this year.

On March 5, members of the Garden Sass Farmers' Market Association met at Sunrise Family Restaurant in Cassville to discuss the 2012 market season.

"Walt Hasler and I stayed until noon a few days last year and sold more from 11 a.m. to noon than we did all morning," said John Potter, Garden Sass president. "I think we need to stay open until noon this year."

Other vendors attending the meeting agreed that the market's hours should be extended.

"We are also planning to expand to three days a week with a second location," said Potter.

This year, the Garden Sass Farmers' Market will be held at the pavilion on Mineral Springs Road behind the Cassville City Park ballfields from 7 a.m. to noon on Tuesday and Friday.

Garden Sass Farmers' Market vendors will also offer produce, crafts and other items at the southwest corner of the Tractor Supply Company parking lot, which is located on Old Exeter Road near the Walmart Supercenter, beginning at 7 a.m. each Saturday.

Vendors will be required to provide their own tables or sell from the back of their vehicles at the Tractor Supply Company location.

"Some of us are expanding our gardens, and Sherry Tucker has the hoop house now, which allows her to grow throughout the year, so we should have even more produce to offer the community," said Potter. "I believe this will be a real asset to the City of Cassville and the Barry County community in whole."

Beginning this year, all Garden Sass Farmers' Market vendors will be required to show a tax identification number issued by the State of Missouri before they will be allowed to sell at the market. All vendors are required to charge state sales tax.

Vendors will be charged a $5 fee the first day they set up at the market. The fee includes a $4 charge to join the Garden Sass Farmers' Market Association and a $1 daily fee.

Vendors will be charged $1 each day they participate in the market throughout the season. Fees are used to pay for advertising and to purchase produce bags, said Potter.

Produce and other items sold at the Garden Sass Farmers' Market must be locally grown or produced.

All area community members and produce growers are invited to take part in the opening day celebration on April 13. Vendors will offer snacks for customers who shop the market on opening day.
