Irene Marie Cheney, 88, of Purdy, passed away Monday, March 5, 2012, in Mercy Hospital Cassville.

She was born in Dorrance, Kan., on Aug. 28, 1923, the daughter of Henry J. and Marie (Schultz) Major. She was united in marriage to William "Bill" G. Cheney on Sept. 26, 1947, in Russell, Kan., who preceded her in death on Oct. 10, 1982. She was also preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Leonard and Darrell Major, and one sister, Marilyn Blagg.

Survivors include: one son, Dana Cheney and his wife, Pam, of Purdy; one daughter, Stephanie Feller and her husband, Steve, of Ft. Collins, Colo.; and five great-grandchildren.

She grew up and received her education in Hays, Kan. She taught school in Dorrance, Kan., teaching grades one through eight in a one-room schoolhouse. She was also an Avon representative for many years in Florence, Ariz., and in Purdy.

Graveside services will be held at 4 p.m. on Saturday in Dorrance City Cemetery, Dorrance, Kan. Sister Diane Wagner will conduct the services. Local arrangements were under the direction of Fohn Funeral Home, Cassville.
