Late surge lifts Lady Tigers
The Exeter Lady Tigers advanced to the semi-finals of the Class 1, District 4 tournament in Rogersville with a 54-46 victory over Koshkonong on Saturday.
The Lady Tigers let a seven-point fourth quarter lead slip away and trailed 44-42 with 3:34 left in the contest, but raced to the finish line behind a 12-2 spurt to secure the victory.
"In the first half, we were the aggressor, and it helped us establish a lead," said Exeter coach Jason Cole. "In the second half they wanted it more. We were content to sit back and didn't go after the ball. In the final couple of minutes, we went back to being aggressive."
Exeter jumped out to an 11-5 lead after one quarter of play and held a 26-20 edge at halftime.
The Lady Bluejays began chipping away at the Lady Tigers' lead, outscoring Exeter 13-12 in the third period to trail 38-33 to begin play in the fourth quarter.
Exeter's Sarah Staples opened the final period with a basket to give the Lady Tigers a seven-point lead at 40-33. Koshkonong would hold Exeter scoreless for nearly four minutes while responding with a 7-0 run to tie the game at 40-40 with 3:52 remaining.
The Lady Bluejays briefly took two leads in the fourth quarter (42-40 and 44-42).
Staples converted steal and scored on a fastbreak to give the Lady Tigers a 46-44 lead with 1:58 left. Exeter would not trail again.

Scoring for Exeter: Staples, 23, Breanna Varner, 16; Sydney Newman, 7; Logan Senters, 4; and Rayanna Fare and Bailey Bowman, 2 apiece.
The Exeter boys' basketball season came to a conclusion on Saturday with a 63-49 loss to Chadwick.
Exeter trailed 18-10 after one quarter and 33-19 at halftime. The Cardinals broke the game open in the third quarter, outscoring the Tigers 15-9 in the third and 15-11 in the fourth period.
The Tigers finished the season 1-23.
