The Southwest Middle School volleyball season is approaching. The Lady Trojans play four home games, six road games and two tournaments over 36 days.
"It's an exciting time because for many of these girls it's their first exposure to the sport other than maybe a camp or gym class," said coach Steve Voyak, who is in his ninth season at Southwest. "It's fun to teach the fundamentals and watch some players really take to the game."
The team is made of girls in seventh and eighth grade. The roster includes: Mikaela Black, Karla Catron, Kayla Catron, Sydney Delasantos, Baylea Ford, Haley Hendrix, Haley Ladd, Savana Leonhardt, Shanay Leroy, Sydney Leroy, Mallory Mettlach, Morgan Mitchell, Jaime Shrum and Victoria Williams.
"All six of the eighth graders starters played last season," Voyak said. "They only won four games, so they want to improve their win total and get ready to make the transition to high school. The seventh graders don't have much experience, but they are working hard to get better."
The 2012 middle school volleyball season started Tuesday with a game against Southwest. The rest of the schedule is as follows: March 9 at Purdy; March 10, Purdy Tournament; March 13 at Galena; March 15 vs. Exeter; March 17, Exeter Tournament; March 19 at Hurley; March 20 vs. Purdy; March 26 at Verona; March 27 at Shell Knob; March 29 vs. Verona; and April 3 vs. Exeter.
