SW girls batter Verona
Verona was nearly doubled up at home by the Southwest Lady Trojans on Friday night. The Lady Wildcats fell 53-27 to Southwest.
"Our two freshmen starters made it hard for (Tristan) Carrasquillo to get in a rhythm," observed Southwest's Steve Rissler. "Our bigs rebounded well and that turned into easy run-out baskets for our guards."
The Lady Trojans jumped to an 18-7 lead in the opening period and held a commanding 32-13 advantage at the half. A 14-4 third period put the game out of reach, although Verona would score 10 points in the final period.
Southwest improves to 15-8 overall and 6-2 in the Ozark 7 Conference. Verona falls to 12-9 overall and 4-4 in league play. The Lady Trojans finish their regular season when they host Exeter for Senior Night on Thursday night. The Lady Wildcats conclude their regular season at Purdy that same night.
Next week, the Trojans open Class 3 District 12 play at Mt. Vernon when they face off against Clever on Monday at 9 p.m.
Southwest scorers: Taylor Mettlach, 16; Montana Hendrix, 13; Michaela Mitchell, 12, Nicole Ickes, 8; Shannon Mitchell, 4; and Cadie Swindle, 2.
Verona scorers: Tristan Carrasquillo, 12; Taylor Pinkly, 6; and Shelby Barsotti, Jessica Youngberg, Rachel Welters and Whitney Shue, 2 each.
SW boys down Verona
Funny things have been known to happen in the old gym at Verona, but things went pretty much as expected on Friday night. The league-leading Southwest Trojans visited Verona and went home with a 71-47 Ozark 7 Conference victory in hand.
The Trojans exploded out of the gate, taking a 29-8 lead at the quarter break. The Wildcats inched back by two points in each of the second and third quarters, but Southwest negated any comeback hopes with a 16-9 final period.
Skylar Knoll led the Trojans with 17 points. Other Southwest scorers were: Tyler Ferguson, 16; Josh Cutberth, 12; Travis Hayworth, 10; Jeff Elkins, 9, James Pettit, 3; and Cristian Sellars, 2.
