The Wheaton Bulldogs held off a fourth quarter rally by Verona to earn a 49-47 Ozark 7 victory last Tuesday night.
Verona and Wheaton battled to a 9-9 tie after one quarter of play. Wheaton dominated the second period, outscoring the Wildcats 16-4 to take a 25-13 lead into halftime.
In the third quarter, the Wildcats chipped away at the Bulldogs' advantage, outperforming Wheaton 13 to 12 to trail 37-26 entering the final period of play.
With 10 seconds left in the game, Verona, down 49-47, inbounded the ball. A last second shot spun in and out as Wheaton held on for the victory.
Scoring for Wheaton: Jory Bartoski, 16; Kyle Robbins, 10; Sean Goosetree, 8; Bubba Gavin, 6; Tyler Musick, 5; and Jesse Mitchell, 3.
Scoring for Verona: Nick Washam, 16; Seth Losack, 13; Wesley Kissinger, 10; Brent Downs, 4; and Larry Patterson and Tomas Estrada, 2 each.
The Verona Lady Wildcats got a 32-point performance from Tristan Carrasquillo and earned a 53-13 victory over Wheaton Tuesday night.
The Lady Wildcats led 19-3 at the end of the first quarter, 35-8 at halftime and 46-9 after three quarters of play.
Scoring for Wheaton were: Mariah Kochell, 7; Sam Etzler, 5; and Shelby Medley, 1.
Scoring for Verona were: Carrasquillo, 32; Taylor Pinkly, 7; Jessica Youngberg and Whitney Shue, 3 each; and Ashlee Rogers, Leann Hesemann, Shelby Barsotti and Aidee Zuniga, 2 apiece.
