The Southwest Lady Trojans won their final nonconference game of the season at Galena on Monday, Feb. 6. Steve Rissler's team defeated the Lady Bears, 72-54, behind a 33-point performance by Michaela Mitchell.
The very next night, Southwest traveled to Joplin and came away with a 64-28 win over the McAuley Lady Warriors. With that win, the Lady Trojans improved to 14-8 overall and 5-2 in the Ozark 7 Conference.
Southwest torched McAuley with quarters of 21-8, 19-6 and 17-8 enroute to the 64-28 final. Nicole Ickes led the Lady Trojans with 15, Shannon Mitchell scored 11, Michaela Mitchell and Montana Hendrix both scored 10. Five other Southwest girls scored in the rout as Steve Rissler emptied his bench in the final quarter.
"It was a good opportunity to get our younger players some varsity action," said Rissler. "They did a good job maintaining intensity and executing our offense. Our confidence and timing are peaking at the right time for us heading into districts."
McAuley's rough week continued on Friday night when the Purdy Lady Eagles beat the Lady Warriors 71-7. Addy Roller led the domination with 35 points.
On Tuesday, Verona downed Wheaton's girls, 53-13 but then lost to the Exeter Lady Tigers, 72-65 on Friday night.
With just two weeks remaining before district play, Purdy continues to lead the pack in the Ozark 7 with their unblemished 7-0 record. Southwest is two games back at 5-2, Verona owns a 4-3 record, Exeter is at 3-3, Wheaton is 1-6 and McAuley trails with a 0-7 mark.
