The Purdy Eagles won the Miller Invitational Tournament Saturday with a 46-41 victory over Spokane.

"This is an exciting time for our program to be able to win the Miller Tournament," said Purdy coach Tommy Egan. "It was a hard-fought game against a well-coached and disciplined Spokane team. We thought the scoring would have to be in the 60's for us to have the advantage. It was very encouraging to find a way to win in a low-scoring, defensive struggle."

The Eagles jumped out to a 13-9 lead in the first quarter, only to see the Owls outperform them in the second period 15-6 to lead 24-19 at halftime.

Purdy regrouped at halftime and attacked the basket in the third period, outscoring Spokane 15-8 in the third period.

"We played really hard on the defensive end and got multiple stops at crucial times in the second half," said Egan. "We also shot free throws well, which has been a struggle for us all year. We are thrilled to bring home a championship but understand we need to continue to improve and not be satisfied."

Purdy was nine of 12 from the charity stripe for the game, including six of seven in the crucial fourth quarter.

Scoring for Purdy were: Drew Williams,12; Alex Haworth, 9; Cody Hall and Devon Bennett, 7 points each; Cameron Terry, 6; and Garen Nelson 5.

Williams was named to the All-Tournament team.

Semi-final

On Friday, the Eagles earned a 73-48 victory over Galena in the semi-final to advance to the championship of the Miller Tournament.

"We did a good job of handling their pressure," said Egan. "We played our best four quarters of the season tonight, and we hope to take this momentum into the rest of our schedule."

The Eagles led 19-10 at the end of the first quarter and cruised into halftime with a 34-19 lead. Purdy continued the strong performance in the second half, outscoring Galena 33-29 for the victory.

Scoring for Purdy were: Williams, 22; Glen Scott, 12; Nelson, 9; Bennett, 8; Hall and Brent Cornman, 7 each; Haworth, 6; and Terry, 2.
