James Freddie Berziel, 86, passed away Monday Dec. 26, 2011, at his home in Joplin.
He was born July 9, 1925, the son of James Nathan and Arvilla (Hance) Berziel. He was the youngest of four children. He was married to Wilma Fern Santee on Sept. 16, 1952, in Eureka Springs, Ark.
He received his education at Wheaton, where he graduated from Wheaton High School. During his life, Fred was a resident of Joplin, and Wheaton. He served his country in the U.S. Army as a military police officer during the Korean War. He served as mayor of Wheaton and was a charter member of Wheaton Southern Baptist Church.
Survivors include: his son, Gale Berziel, of Grove, Okla.; his daughter, Patricia Adams and her husband, Wayne, of Neosho; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Fern, on July 16, 2005; his parents; and his siblings, Hazel Berziel, George Berziel, Maxine Lee and Leora Flora.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday in Wheaton Southern Baptist Church under the direction of McQueen Funeral Home, Wheaton. Pastor Richard Buck will conduct the services. Burial with military honors will be held at Rocky Comfort Cemetery, in Rocky Comfort.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. today (Wednesday) in McQueen Funeral Home, Wheaton.
