Clerk deters attempted armed robbery

Wednesday, December 21, 2011

An attempted armed robbery at a Monett convenience store and gas station ended in disappointment for the would-be robber.

Monett Police Chief Tim Schweder reported an armed masked bandit entered H&W Oil Company (Herd's), located at 600 Cleveland Ave. in Monett, at about 8:20 p.m. on Sunday. The bandit brandished a weapon and demanded the clerk open the register and turn over the cash.

The clerk refused.

The bandit replied, "Okay," and left the store.

The man is described as being between 5'2'' and 5'7" in height, weighing between 125 and 130 pounds. He was dressed in black clothing, gloves and stocking cap and was wearing a rubber Halloween mask. He was carrying what appeared to be a rifle.

"This is the first time this year that we've had an attempted armed robbery of a business," Schweder said.

Investigators are reviewing video of the incident.

The Barry-Lawrence Chapter of Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $1,000 for tips that lead to the arrest of the suspect.

Anyone having information on the incident is urged to call 354-TIPS (8477) or 1-888-635-TIPS (8477) toll free. Tipsters may remain anonymous.
