YMCA to offer childcare program on snow days

Wednesday, December 14, 2011

In an effort to accommodate working parents when area school districts cancel classes due to inclement weather, the Cassville YMCA will once again offer Snow Day Snow Camp this winter.

"This is a place where parents can put kids when classes are canceled," said Bob Crouthamel, Cassville YMCA sports and youth director. "So often parents have to say home and miss work when their kids are out of school or take a day of vacation, which is no fun."

The Cassville YMCA began offering the Snow Day Snow Camp, which is for kindergarten through sixth grade students, last year. Several families took advantage of the program during the 2010-11 school year.

"We will offer the snow camp anytime Cassville, Southwest, Exeter or Wheaton cancels classes," said Crouthamel, who oversees the snow camp. "The camp operates from 7 a.m. to around 6 p.m., but we will have supervision there as early as 5 a.m. if kids need to be dropped off earlier."

Snow camp will offer a variety of activities that are similar to the programs offered during the Cassville YMCA's Family Fun Night. Activities will include dodge ball, soccer, clothes pin tag, Lilly Pad Hop, Gladiator and Steal Your Bacon.

"We have a basketball goal now, and we have the rock wall and foam pit," said Crouthamel. "We will probably offer movies at lunch time, and we will have a homework area for students who need to complete homework or study."

The snow camp will also offer arts and crafts activities, including the construction and decorating of a life-size gingerbread house.

"The idea is to make sure the kids have fun and are tired at the end of the day," said Crouthamel. "We want them to be ready for bed when they go home, which is good for the parents too."

The snow camp will offer a morning snack and an afternoon snack. Parents are asked to send a bag lunch to the camp with their children.

"I will be the primary childcare person, but we will have a lot of support staff," said Crouthamel. "We will have plenty of supervision for the kids."

Parents will be asked to complete an information packet that includes emergency contact and pick-up information on the first day that their child attends the snow camp.

The Snow Day Snow Camp will cost $10 per child per day. YMCA members can attend the camp for $7.50 per day.
