J.D. Smith, 84, of Pierce City, died on Monday, Dec. 12, 2011, at Freeman Health System West in Joplin. He was born at Star City on June 9, 1927, the son of thurman and Lou (Oaks) Smith. He was married to Kaye Kelly on June 22, 1956, in Monett. He was a member of the First Congregational Church in Pierce City, Decatur Lodge #400 in Pierce City, and Abou Ben Adhem Shrine Temple in Springfield.
He graduated from Cassville High School and received an undergraduate degree at SMS in Springfield. He went on to receive his master's degree from the University of Arkansas. He was superintendent in several southwest Missouri schools. He served at Pierce City, Southwest, Exeter, Marion-ville and after retiring served again at Pierce City.
Survivors include: his wife, Kaye, of the home; his daughter, Melissa Smith, of Pierce City; and one sister, Ruby Marbut, of Springdale, Ark.
The family will receive friends at the Lakin Funeral Home in Pierce City on Thursday, from 7 to 8 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at the Lakin Funeral Home on Friday at 11 a.m. with Rev. Darren Helms and Rev. Bob Hubbard officiating. Burial will follow at Sparks Cemetery near Butterfield.
