Southwest gives faculty members one-time stipend

Wednesday, December 7, 2011

The Southwest R-5 School Board voted to give all faculty members a one-time stipend at its regularly scheduled meeting on Nov. 17.

All full-time certified faculty members will receive a $500 stipend, and full-time non-certified staff members will receive a $250 stipend. Part-time employees will receive a $100 stipend.

"The stipend being paid to all certificated employees is compensation for the time invested in professional development activities that have taken place outside of the regular school day," said Bob Walker, superintendent. "Our classified folks are being paid a lesser amount, but our board wanted to express their appreciation to them as well.

"Though not described as 'Christmas bonuses,' our board certainly thought our staff members could use the extra money at this time of year and were happy to do this," said Walker.

The board also hired several staff members during the meeting, including Jennifer Ross who was hired as the girls basketball assistant coach.

Other new employees include: Cassi Roller, Darrel Tilford, Greg Turner, Aleesa Randall and Gail Towers, substitute teachers; and Sherry Uhl, substitute custodian.

In other business, the Southwest R-5 School Board:

* Approved the math curriculum for the 2011-12 school year.

* Reviewed the library media centers, technology and facilities and grounds reports.

* Approved an early graduation request from Amanda Hinde.

* Held a one-hour and 12-minute executive session to discuss student matters.
