The Southwest Lady Trojans claimed first place at the Thomas Jefferson Lady Cavalier Classic at Diamond High School on Saturday. Southwest defeated Verona 67-28 in the championship game on Saturday. Earlier in the week, the Lady Trojans beat Sarcoxie (76-22) and Diamond (52-22) to advance to the final.
Southwest dominated Sarcoxie last Tuesday night, jumping to a 28-6 lead in the first quarter and then throttling the Lady Bears with a 20-1 second quarter. Michaela Mitchell led Southwest with 20 points, and Taylor Mettlach added 16. Nicole Ickes and Montana Hendrix also reached double figures with 13 and 10 respectively, as eight Lady Trojans scored in the contest.
Southwest scorers were: Michaela Mitchell, 20; Mettlach, 16; Ickes, 13; Hendrix, 10; Shannon Mitchell, 6; Cady Swindle, 5; Jessica Morgan, 4; and Sarah Conley, 2.
In the Friday semifinal game, the Diamond Lady Wildcats opened with an 11-6 lead, but the Southwest defensive pressure took over the game after the first break. Diamond would only score 11 points in the final three quarters of play against the Lady Trojans' press.
Ickes and Mettlach both poured in 12 points to lead the Southwest attack.
Southwest scorers were: Ickes, 12; Mettlach, 12; Michaela Mitchell, 8; Shannon Mitchell, 7; Hendrix, 6; Swindle, 3; Morgan, 2; and Conley, 2.
In the title game against Verona, the Mitchell sisters, Michaela and Shannon, led all scorers with 14 and 12 points respectively. Hendrix reached double figures with 10.
