The Southwest Trojans opened the season with a 46-33 victory over Ash Grove in first round action at the Strafford Tournament on Monday night.
The Trojans' big man Skylar Knoll paced top-seeded Southwest with 18 points, and James Pettit added 11 as the Trojans controlled the paint. Point guard Travis Hayworth scored 9, Josh Cutberth had 4, and Jordan Epling and Tyler Ferguson both scored 2.
The Trojans led 13-9 after one quarter and held a 22-13 lead at halftime. The Southwest defense throttled Ash Grove, limiting the Pirates to single digits in three of the four periods. Nic Cashio led Ash Grove with 7 points in the contest.
