Sellars earns All-State medal at cross country championships

Southwest's senior Cristian Sellars joined a long list of Trojans who have earned All-State medals at the state cross country championships. Sellars raced to 24th place in the Class 1 boys race at the Oak Hills Golf Center in Jefferson City on Saturday to lead Southwest to a 14th place team finish.

Class 1 Boys

The Linn Wildcats claimed their first team title since 1999. Kaleb Wilson led the Wildcats with his first place performance, and Linn defeated Sparta for the team title, 78-79.

Southwest at Washburn finished 14th as a team. Cristian Sellars led the way for the Trojans, placing 24th with a time of 18:27.13. He was followed by: James Pettit, 83rd, 19:41.37; Kyle Miller, 134th, 21:03.92; Zach Miles, 135th, 21:04.60; and Jake Shrum, 169th, 24:20.12.

Wheaton finishers were Jonathan Sherwood, 51st, 19:08.121, and Tyler Pendergraft, 90th, 19:51.01.

Class 1 Girls

Russellville, Salisbury, Plato, and Midway claimed the team trophies in the Class 1 Girls division. Midway senior McKenzie Weis claimed first place with her 20:12.24.

The Wheaton Lady Bulldogs finished 16th in the team standings, scoring 408.

Wheaton runners: Chase Burns, 120th, 25:52.63; Samantha Etzler, 130th, 26:23.40; Brittany Harmon, 136th, 26:41.64; BreAnn Brattin, 142nd, 27:04.60; and Krista Dunegan, 161st, 34:45.71.

Southwest runners: Chelsea Leroy, 141st, 26:58.53; and Brittany Miles, 145th, 27:18.89.

Class 2 Boys

The Class 2 boys race was the closest of the day. Herculaneum added another team championship to their trophy case, scoring 123. St. Pius X and Fatima both scored 143, with X getting the nod on the sixth-man tiebreaker.

Brandon Shemonia, of Scott City, was the individual winner with his 16:20.34. Drew Buckner, of Lamar, placed 28th, and Jared Hopkins, of East Newton, finished 29th to lead area runners.

Southwest Missouri teams Strafford, Lamar and Hollister placed seventh, ninth and 12th respectively.

Class 2 Girls

The Herculaneum girls won the Class 2 team title with 95 points. Springfield Catholic placed second with 125, followed by Stockton with 139 and Blair Oaks with 162. Teams from Strafford and Mountain Grove finished sixth and 16th respectively. Saga Barzowski, of Arcadia Valley, was the individual winner, running 19:37.89.

Class 3 Boys

Drew White, of Festus, was the Class 3 boys individual champion with his 16:05.71 performance. Warrensburg claimed the team title, scoring 72. Festus, MICDS and Smithville finished behind Festus in the team race.

Monett senior Chris Renteria claimed 29th place, just four spots away from an All-State medal. Renteria finished in 17:44.95. Area teams Logan-Rogersville and Bolivar finished 10th and 11th respectively.

Class 3 Girls

Kearney, led by individual champion Olivia Franklin, won the Class 3 girls team title with 53 points. Farmington, Ladue Horton Watkins and Smithville followed the Lady Bulldogs on the awards stand.

Southwest Missouri teams Bolivar and McDonald County placed sixth and 16th respectively.

Deborah Kern, a junior from Cassville, finished 109th in 22:44.79. Madeleine Weber, a sophomore from Monett, placed 138th in 23:34.08.

Class 4 Boys

Caleb Wilfong, of Rock Bridge, was the Class 4 boys individual champion in 15:54.13, and his Rock Bridge team claimed first place, scoring 61 in the team standings.

Rockhurst, West Plains , and Lee's Summit North followed Rock Bridge in the standings. Springfield's Glendale High School finished 11th.

Class 4 Girls

On an incredible day for Class 4 girls, three different runners broke the 19-minute barrier, with Samantha Nightingale, of Blue Springs South, winning in 18:05.51. Hannah Long, of Eureka, was second in 18:29.71 and Brigette Caruthers, of Branson, was third in 18:49.14.

Lee's Summit West won the team race with 77 points, followed by Rock Bridge, Francis Howell and St. Teresa's Academy. Branson's Lady Pirates finished ninth.
