Cook-off returns in less than three weeks

The Cassville Area Chamber of Commerce's annual Chili and Salsa Cook-Off will be held on the square in Cassville on Saturday, Oct. 22. Booths will open at 8 a.m.

The theme for this year's event is 50s and 60s. Participants will be encouraged to decorate their booths using the theme. Prizes will be awarded to the most spirited and best decorated booths.

In addition to piping hot chili and spicy salsa, this year's event will offer an assortment of other entertainment, including live music, shopping, gymnastics and martial arts demonstrations, a performance by the Bootkickers, food vendors and craft booths. Craft vendors will offer a variety of products ranging from tutus and hair bows to cedar furniture.

A pet parade, sponsored by Cassville Veterinary Clinic, will be held at 10 a.m. Participants should register in the Commerce Bank parking lot at 9:30 a.m.

First and second place prizes will be awarded to the top pet parade participants. The top pet will receive a certificate for a bath and nail trim, a package of Frontline and a bag of food. The runner-up will receive a bag of food and a package of Frontline.

The third annual Chili Dog Challenge, sponsored by Sonic, will be held at 11:10 a.m. The contestant who consumes five chili dogs the fastest or who eats the most chili dogs in 12 minutes will be proclaimed the winner of the competitive eating event.

The Chili Dog Challenge winner will receive $100 in Cassville Cash and a basket of items donated by local businesses.

Individuals interested in participating in the Chili Dog Challenge should pre-register as soon as possible. The competition will be limited to the first 10 individuals who register. Contestants must be 18 years of age or older.

Popular local band Barry County Connection will take the stage at noon. Band members include Ryan Preddy, Tim Thompson, Jay Bailey, Roddy England, Robby England, Rokky England, Eli Stehlik and Terry Pyles.

Lane Truman will serve as the master of ceremonies for this year's event.

Long and short sleeve Chili and Salsa Cook-Off T-shirts will be available at the chamber office next week. T-shirts will also be sold at the event.
