Depth, experience boost CHS Xcountry

Cassville's Chris Shore is excited about the prospects for his high school cross country team. Shore has 10 boys and three girls out running and sees a much improved squad on the boys' side.

"We have not had a competitive boys team in quite some time, and I feel like this group may break the streak," said Shore. "We have depth and some kids with the want to. It's going to be fun to see what they can do."

The Lady Wildcats are led by Reba Dupont, a senior, and Deborah Kern, a junior. Both Dupont and Kern were members of the 2010 Big 8 Conference championship team, and Kern went on to finish 82nd at the Class 3 state meet. Newcomer Emily Cole joins the squad and will be tested early.

The Wildcat boys have one senior Ben Makela and six juniors Jordan Shore, Walker Perez, Taylor Dodson, Connor Redmon, Chris Hinebaugh and TJ Mathews. Freshmen Kyle Stephenson, Nathan Vitt and Matt Vermillion complete the squad.

Dodson, Shore and Perez finished 38th, 46th and 47th, respectively in last year's Class 3 District 6 meet at Bolivar. Hinebaugh was 61st, giving the Wildcats four boys with championship experience.

Cassville, a member of Class 3 District 6, starts the season at the Carthage Invitational on Sept. 8. The Wildcats will host their own invitational on Oct. 10.
