Traveling soccer team now forming

Wednesday, August 17, 2011

The Cassville YMCA will offer a traveling soccer team for sixth, seventh and eighth grade students this year. Cassville U-15 Travel Soccer Team will begin practice on Tuesday, Aug. 23.

"The YMCA youth soccer league stops at sixth grade," said Bob Crouthamel, Cassville YMCA youth and sports director. "There is nothing to prepare kids for high school soccer. This team will extend the local soccer program from pre-kindergarten to high school."

Crouthamel, who has over 15 years of experience playing and coaching soccer, has volunteered to serve as the coach of the traveling team.

"I worked with the new Cassville High School soccer coach (Andrew Hoskins) this summer, and we shared ideas on how we can build the local program," said Crouthamel. "I believe this is the best way we can promote the sport."

Crouthamel began playing soccer at the age of 5. Throughout his life, he has competed in a variety of leagues, at the high school and college level and on club ball, indoor soccer and semi-professional teams.

"If I can contribute and share my experience to help local kids, I want to," said Crouthamel. "Through this program, the YMCA will be partnering with Coach Hoskins to help build the soccer program back to where it was when the high school team was winning championships. We are very excited about this program."

According to Crouthamel, the Cassville U-15 team will offer youngsters a more competitive recreational program. The local traveling team will compete in the Midwest Select Youth Soccer Program, which includes teams from Neosho, Joplin, Monett and Carl Junction and Kansas communities.

Cassville U-15 will be a co-ed team. All players who sign up will have the opportunity to play. No try-outs will be held.

Players will be required to present a copy of their birth certificate and a signed copy of a medical release when they register for the program. A head shot photo will be taken of each player at registration.

YMCA members can take part in the program for $15. Non-member players will be charged $40. Players will also be charged $10 for MYSHA registration. Financial assistance is available to qualifying players.

The Cassville U-15 Travel Soccer Team's first game is scheduled to be held on Saturday, Sept. 10.

For more information or to register for the program, visit the Cassville YMCA, located on Highway 248 in Cassville, call Crouthamel at 846-1535 or 342-4493 or email him at bcrouthamel@cassvilleymca.org.
