Virgil Roy Flaxbeard, 86, of Rocky Comfort, passed away Friday, July 22, 2011, after a long illness.
He was born Feb. 20, 1925, in Bethlehem, Mo., the son of Andy "Bogue" and Bessie Victoria (Utter) Flaxbeard. On Sept. 27, 1946, he was united in marriage to Dorothy Lee Dickens, and to this union four daughters were born. She preceded him in death on Oct. 4, 1997. In September 1998, he married Betty (Richardson) Rogers, who passed away on Feb. 20, 2010. Others preceding him in death were his parents; six brothers; and one sister.
Survivors include: four daughters, Brenda Love and husband, Butch, of Rocky Comfort, Linda Granger and husband, Bill, of Purdy, Karen Brown and husband, Gary, of Fairview, and Terrill Murphy and husband, Gary of Marshfield; one brother, Charley Flaxbeard, of Redding, Calif.; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He grew up in McDonald County and attended school in Rocky Comfort. During World War II, he joined the U.S. Army, serving from July 14, 1944, until Aug. 20, 1946. He spent most of his life as a farmer and was a member of the Prosperity Baptist Church in Rocky Comfort.
Graveside services with military honors were held Monday in Rocky Comfort Cemetery, under direction of McQueen Funeral Home, Wheaton.
