Concert to benefit Joplin church

Wednesday, July 13, 2011

The Barry County Southern Baptist Association is planning a gospel concert that will benefit Harmony Heights Baptist Church in Joplin, which was completely destroyed by an EF-5 tornado. The concert will be held at New Site Baptist Church in Monett at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 5.

On May 22, Harmony Heights Baptist Church members were listening to a sermon by Pastor Charlie Burnett when tornado warning sirens sounded. A group of 53 people who were in attendance sought shelter in an interior room of the church, but three congregation members perished in the storm. The building had no basement.

Burnett sang and preached at the Barry County Southern Baptist Association workers' conference in May of 2010.

"He is a great man of God, and he's been my friend for many years," said Randy Comer, Barry County Southern Baptist Association director of missions. "The Lord has put it upon my heart and the hearts of others to host a benefit gospel concert.

"A love offering will be received and a check presented to Pastor Charlie, who will be there to sing and share with us," said Comer.

Donations should be made payable to the Barry County Baptist Association. One check will be made payable to Burnett following the concert.

New Site Baptist Church is located at 1925 Farm Road 1060 in Monett.
