Barry County restaurants undergo inspections in May

The Environmental Services division of the Barry County Health Department inspected 24 food-service establishments during the month of May. Of that group, 10 establishments had critical violations, 14 had no critical or non-critical violations.

The Playce in Shell Knob, Big M Marina in Cassville and Little Tommy's Dogs I underwent routine inspections in May that yielded no critical or non-critical violations. Country N in Wheaton underwent a follow-up inspection on May 2 and no critical or non-critical violations were found. Braum's in Monett was inspected following a complaint and no critical or non-critical violations were found. Pizza Hut in Monett, Country Diner in Shell Knob, Little Tommy's Dogs II, Dock and Eat in Cassville, B & J's in Shell Knob, Red Barn Antiques in Shell Knob, Utopian Bean in Purdy, T & T Concessions Tropical Sno and A Taste of Heaven underwent pre-opening inspections in May that yielded no critical or non-critical violations. Permits were issued for all nine restaurants.

Critical violations were found at 10 establishments:

* Ramey #16 in Cassville underwent a routine inspection on May 2, and eight critical and seven non-critical violations were found. Critical violations were: chicken and burritos in hot hold not held at 140 degrees or above; sanitizer too strong in bakery; black styrofoam containers for food stored upside down on dirty shelving in produce area; employee not washing between changing gloves and changing tasks; uncovered employee beverage in meat area; raw poultry stored over ham, kielbasa sausage and whole beef; raw beef stored on cheese, raw ground beef stored over whole beef; and chemicals stored above food. All violations were corrected on the spot.

* Lai Lai Asain Buffet underwent a routine inspection on May 3, and one critical and two non-critical violations were found. The critical violation was employee used cloth towel instead of a disposable towel to dry hands after washing them. The violation was corrected on the spot.

* McDonald's in Monett underwent an inspection following a complaint on May 5, and one critical and two non-critical violations were found. The critical violation was employee wiped down counters with sanitizer then returned to preparing food without changing gloves or washing hands. The violation was corrected on the spot.

* Roadhouse Grill and Pub in Shell Knob underwent a routine inspection on May 10, and one critical and one non-critical violations were found. The critical violation was taco meat held at 130 degrees on steam table. The violation was corrected on the spot.

* Rapid Roberts in Monett underwent a routine inspection on May 10, and one critical and three non-critical violations were found. The critical violation was drink machine leaking. A follow-up inspection was conducted on May 26, and no critical or non-critical violations were found.

* Shell Knob Senior Center underwent a routine inspection on May 10, and four critical and two non-critical violations were found. Critical violations were: scrambled eggs prepared for serving line from pooled raw shell eggs; can opener blade has food debris on it, underside of stand-up mixer has dried food debris on it and food debris in utensil holder; thawed food items not properly dated; and sanitizing solution too strong. All violations were corrected on the spot.

* Gizmo's Event Center in Wheaton underwent a routine inspection on May 20, and four critical and one non-critical violations were found. Critical violations were: can opener put away as clean has food debris on its blade; bottle with chemical cleaner not labeled; sanitizer too strong; and chili from previous Saturday not dated with seven-day discard date. All violations were corrected on the spot.

* Miss Fits in Cassville underwent an inspection following a complaint on May 24 and five critical and nine non-critical violations were found. Critical violations were: numerous food items held using time as a public health control are not propertly documented; three uncovered beverages in kitchen; numerous food items in the reach-in refrigerator not stored to prevent cross contamination; dirty dishes stored as clean on a soiled shelf and both microwaves have dried food debris inside; and employees wiping food contact surfaces with dry towels and sanitizer not used. All violations were corrected on the spot.

* Fat Stanleez in Eagle Rock underwent a routine inspection on May 27 and one critical and two non-critical violations were found. Critical violations were: sanitizer at server station too strong. The violation was corrected on the spot.

* Sunrise Family Restaurant in Monett underwent a routine inspection on May 27 and one critical and three non-critical violations were found. The critical violation was raw chicken stored above raw fish in walk-in cooler. The violation was corrected on the spot.

Environmental Services conducts routine inspections of all food service establishments in the county.

Food service code violations are divided into two categories: critical and non-critical violations. Critical violations are more likely than other violations to contribute to food contaminations, or illness and/or injury. Non-critical violations, although important to the overall hygiene of the establishment, do not necessarily present an immediate threat to food contamination or illness and/or injury.
