Dr. James H. "Jim" Timmons, 87, of Pittsburg, Kan., passed away Monday, June 27, 2011, in Brandon Woods South Retirement Home, Lawrence, Kan.
He was born on Nov. 1, 1923, in Mineral Springs. He was the fifth child of Roy and Bertha Timmons.
After graduating from Cassville High School in 1943, he joined the U.S. Navy, serving on board the USS Shamrock Bay during World War II. He later attended college on the GI Bill and earned degrees from Southwest Missouri State and a doctorate in education from the University of Arkansas. Before joining the faculty at Pittsburg State University in 1959, he held positions as high school principal and school superintendent in various districts throughout southwest Missouri. In 1949, he married Susie England.
Survivors include: two children, James Kyle Timmons, of Anchorage, Alaska, and Kimberly Timmons Anderson, of Lawrence, Kan.; three grandchildren; one brother, R.J. Timmons, of Exeter; and one sister, Edith Steverson, of Cassville.
Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday in Mineral Springs Cemetery, under direction of Fohn Funeral Home, Cassville.
