Cancer patients gain assistance from gift cards

Wednesday, June 15, 2011

As gasoline prices continue to escalate, the American Cancer Society is happy to offer assistance to cancer patients by reducing travel costs to and from treatment. Eligible patients can apply for a $50 gasoline gift card. Gift cards are available to cancer patients traveling at least 30 miles one-way to access treatment.

An estimated 183 Barry County residents will learn that they have cancer this year. Because of advances in medical research, there will be cures for many. Getting to the cures, however, may be a problem.

"One cancer patient requiring radiation therapy could need anywhere from 20 to 30 trips to treatment in six weeks," said Tamara Wilfong, community manager for the American Cancer Society. "A patient receiving chemotherapy might report for treatment weekly for up to a year. In many cases, the cost of treatment is overwhelming and we feel this is one more way we can help cancer patients as they continue their fight against cancer."

The American Cancer Society offers a variety of resources to patients undergoing cancer treatment, free of charge. The Society continues to serve as many individuals as possible with the transportation assistance program; many patients accessing this aid also benefit from other Society services and programs, such as free wigs and prostheses, lodging, patient navigation and help with appearance-related side effects.

For more information about the transportation assistance program or other Society programs and services, contact Wilfong at the Springfield office of the American Cancer Society at 417-447-1489.
