Dale B. Shellenberger, 87, of Purdy, formerly of Emporia, Kan., passed away on May 23, 2011, at St. John's Hospital in Springfield.
He was born on July 21, 1923, in Bushong, Kan., son of John W. and Isla (McKinsey) Shellenberger During his school age years, he attended Agnes City Grade School and Bushong High School. He also attended the Kansas State Teachers College. During this time, he and a group enlisted into the U.S. Army in 1943. He served for three years, two of those years he was stationed in the Pacific. After returning from serving, he returned to the Kansas State Teachers College. After completion, he taught for one year at the Ozark County Grade School. On March 13, 1949, he was united in marriage to Roberta Taylor. She preceded him in death on Aug. 21, 2007. He worked 15 years for the Santa Fe Railway and then for the U.S. Post Office, retiring after 20 years of service. He was a life member of the Emporia V.F.W. and a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge.
Survivors include: one son, John Shellenberger and his wife, Stacy, of Purdy; three granddaughters; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Clyde Shellenberger, and his wife, Barbara, of Gardner, Kan.; and two sisters, Darlene Reese and her husband, Trevor, of Emporia, Kan., and Helen Becker, of Topeka, Kan.
Memorial services will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to Haven of the Ozarks and may be entrusted to the White Funeral Home.
