Lady Wildcat runners are second in Big 8 meet
The Cassville Lady Wildcats claimed second place in the team standings at the Big 8 Conference Track and Field Championships at Lamar on Tuesday, May 3, while the Cassville boys finished third.
Carl Junction won the boys division with 99.5 points. Lamar took second with 95, followed by Cassville (89.5), Mt. Vernon (63), Aurora (63), East Newton (57), Monett (48.5) and Seneca (42.5).
Carl Junction also won the pink division, rolling up 143 points. Cassville was second with 102, followed by Monett (87), Aurora (78), Lamar (77), East Newton (40), Seneca (20) and Mt. Vernon (7).
Cassville's Wildcats were strong in the sprints and hurdles, had some string showings in the field events but struggled in the middle distance, distance and relay events. The 'Cats finished within 10 points of the winning Bulldogs but had to feel that an opportunity had been lost.
Josh Lewright paced the Wildcats, winning both the 100- and 200-meter dashes, placing fifth in the 400 and third in the triple jump. Trevor Shumaker placed third in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes.
Cody Frana won the high hurdles and finished second in the 300-meter barrier event.
Garrett Mahurin and Justin Pflug placed third and fourth respectively in the shot, while Devin Linenbrink finished third in the long jump and fifth in the triple jump. Scott Marshall finished fifth in the high jump, and Kendall Cooper tied for fifth in the pole vault.
The relays proved to be Cassville's undoing. The Wildcats finished fourth in the 4x200, fifth in the 4x100 and fifth in the 4x800.
Girls race to silver
Jessica Barrientos ran the meet of her life for the Lady Wildcats. The experienced senior won both the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs and placed a gutsy sixth in the 800-meter dash to help push her team to a second place finish in the team standings.
Calisia Brookes won the 100-meter dash with Risa Darveaux placing fifth. Reba Dupont and Danielle Pianalto took second and third in the 200-meter.
The Lady Wildcats won both the 4x100 and 4x200 meter relays with the team of Darveaux, Brookes, Pianalto and Reba Dupont. Cassville's 4x800 relay team of Deborah Kern, Chantel Huse, Kelsey Baker and Barrientos finished third, and the 4x400 relay team was sixth.
Becca Haney was second in the pole vault while Darveaux was second in the high jump. Katelyn Pitts placed fifth in the discus, and Sidney Atkinson finished sixth in the pole vault. Pianalto took third in the triple jump, and Brookes placed fourth in the long jump.
