Southwest bats quiet in road losses
The Southwest Trojans lost a pair of games on the diamond last week. The Trojans dropped a 2-1 decision at Sparta on Thursday and then were shut out at Diamond on Friday, 6-0.
Batting slumps are frustrating things, and Kenny Ferguson's club had its fill of frustration in the two-game road trip.
"Even though we didn't have a hit against Sparta, we had an excellent chance to win that game," said Southwest assistant Tony Eagleburger.
Take the Yogi Berra-like oxymoron statement for what it's worth: the Trojans were on the south end of a no-hitter but held a 1-0 lead into the fourth inning before the hosts from Sparta earned the victory with one run in both the fourth and the fifth innings.
Tyler Ferguson took the tough loss for the Trojans, while Sparta's Shipman earned the win.
On Friday, the Diamond Wildcats methodically dispatched Southwest, scoring in four different innings while racking up the 6-0 win. Diamond's Epperson walked two and gave up a pair of singles in blanking the Trojans.
Diamond improved to 7-5 with the victory while the Southwest Trojans slipped to 5-10.
