The Cassville Wildcats jumped to a 7-0 lead in the first two innings and cruised to a 14-7 Big 8 Conference baseball at Lamar on Tuesday, April 12. Austin Deffenbaugh started and got the win with relief help from Evan Stubblefield and John Cavness.
A Ricky Nichols single and an RBI from Cavness gave the 'Cats a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Cassville erupted for six runs in the second frame, taking full advantage of doubles by Stubblefield, Kreg Myers and Ben Makela. Deffenbaugh shut out the Tigers a second time, and the Wildcats owned the 7-0 lead going into the third.
Lamar finally held Cassville scoreless in the top of the third inning, and then the Tigers broke through in the bottom of the inning. A three-run homer pulled Lamar within 7-3.
The Tigers made a game of it in the fourth and fifth innings. Although Cassville scored two more runs in the top of the fourth, Lamar plated three in the fourth and one in the bottom of the fifth inning to cut the Cassville lead to 9-7.
But the Wildcats came up with two runs in the sixth inning to stretch the lead back to 11-7. Josh Sexton's RBI single plated Trey Rose, and then Kyle Brattin was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score Sexton.
Cassville added three insurance runs in the seventh inning. Nichols walked, stole second and scored on a Rose single. Rose came home on a double by Cavness, and consecutive sacrifices brought Cavness home with the 14th run for Cassville.
Cavness came on to pitch the final two innings and shut down the Lamar attack. In the seventh inning, he faced only three batters as Kyle Wood's team earned a 14-7 victory.
With the win, Cassville improves to 4-6 overall and 1-0 in the conference.
