Mary "Ruth" Stephens, 87, of Cassville, formerly of Washburn, passed away Tuesday, March 15, 2011, in her home.

She was born April 12, 1923, in Purdy, the daughter of Finis and Lori (Stephenson) Prewitt. On Dec. 8, 1940, in Barry County, she was united in marriage to Leon Stephens, who preceded her in death on Nov. 11, 1996. Also preceding her in death were her parents; a daughter-in-law, Donna Stephens; five brothers, Bethel, Gene, J.R., Bob and Frankie Ray Prewitt and two sisters, O'Dean Senters and Eva Mae Higgs.

Survivors include: three sons, James Stephens, of Cassville, Donnie Stephens, of Cassville, and Eddie Stephens and his wife, Debbie, of Carthage; two daughters, Peggy Edie and her husband, Doyle, of Exeter, and Nita Bradford, of Cassville; one brother, Lester Prewitt, of Exeter; one sister, Virginia Prewitt, of Exeter; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.

She received her education at Wheaton, where she graduated from high school. She lived in Washburn most of her life, where she farmed and worked in the saw mill with her husband. She was a member of Mission Baptist Church at Washburn.

Funeral services were held Friday, March 18, 2011, in Mission Baptist Church, Washburn, under direction of Fohn Funeral Home, Cassville. Pastor Dayton Brattin and Rev. Jerry Yarnall conducted the services. Burial was at Washburn Prairie Cemetery, Washburn.
